Probate Inventories
Borough of Wilmington

Introduction: Probate Inventories were taken to enumerate cash and possessions for individuals who died without leaving a will. The level of detail is different among inventories but in many cases important information concerning room use can be found. When cross-referencing inventories with other data sources, such as street directories, Orphan's Court records, Federal Census records or tax records, one can further develop the appearance and use of a particular building.

This collection of inventories will contain those entries that specifically referred to the Borough of Wilmington. The time period of these entries is the late 18th to late 19th centuries.

All inventories were compiled and edited by Richard E. Stevens, University of Delaware. Every effort was made to transcribe these records as accurately as possible. Spelling was left as it occurred in the original records. Any missing or illegible words are indicated by the use of [ ]'s. Additional information which was present, either in the probate documents or by linking to other datasets has been included.
