Welcome! Come on in and play!
You do not have to know about mathematics or fluid dynamics to have
some fun with fluids. This is a little toy I whipped up to inspire my
students. I hope you enjoy it.
What you need.
This applet requires a
Java 2 plugin. Most browsers will offer
to grab one for you if you do not have one already.
What is here:
In the applet above, you can see a window and some buttons.
- Some fluid: The window represents the fluid. It's not
moving at first.
- Vortices: You can
put a positive point vortex (with unit circulation, rotating
anti-clockwise) into the fluid by pressing the left button. It
will be shown as a little blue "+". You can add a negative vortex
(with clockwise rotation) with the right button. It will be shown
as a little red "+".
- Flow controls: If you press the "Go" button, the fluid will
start moving. Depending upon where the vortices are located and
how fast your computer is, the vortices will move around at different
rates. Press "Stop" to stop the flow. Press "Clear" to
remove everything and start over.
- Flow visualization: The middle mouse button adds passive
markers to the fluid so that you can see what it is doing away from the
point vortices.
