What I hear, I forget; what I see, I remember; what I do, I understand. ----Chinese proverb
This is a Chinese saying that I believe and reflects my teaching philosophy: active learning oriented teaching.
Students have different preference and strength for learning through visual, aural, reading and writing. This indicates that in the teaching process, it is not a good strategy for the teacher to use one single approach to deliver knowledge. With this in mind, I am trying to implement multiple teaching technologies, such as UD Capture, video clip from web, clicker, document camera, etc. to facilitate teaching. However, most of the time, these technologies focus on visual and aural approaches. One of the effective active learning approaches involving reading and writing is teaching with small groups, which develops more interaction between teacher and students, as well as the interaction among students. Group-based activities also help students establish a better understanding via sharing ideas and learning from peers. Therefore, my main goal as an instructor is to use all aspects of active learning approaches to facilitate learning and to explain abstract knowledge in an easy-to-understand way.
