MATH PROFICIENCY EXAM
The next time this test will be administered will be 9
to 11 am on Saturday, September 6. All
students MUST sign up for the exam by Thursday, 9/4 at noon. Please go to room 116
EWG to sign up. The location of the exam will be announced when you sign
up.
You must bring a number two pencil, a calculator and your student
ID to the exam.
This exam is designed to allow students
with a good mathematical background satisfy the College of Arts and Science BA
math skills requirement without taking a mathematics course. (Other colleges
may or may not allow this math waiver; you should check with your advisor or
dean.) If you are interested, please check with your
advisor that this test will apply to your program.
The test covers roughly the same
content as Math 114. For this reason it is popularly known as the "M114
Waiver Exam". The test consists of thirty multiple-choice questions
covering algebra, functions and elementary statistics. Twenty or more questions
correctly answered are considered passing. Students are given two hours to
complete the exam. Results will either be sent to you via e-mail or you can
stop by 116 EWG the Wednesday after the exam is administered. You are only allowed
ONE attempt on this exam.
Bettyann Daley of the Preparatory
Mathematics Program administers this test. It is administered three times
during the academic year. It is
administered in September, generally the Friday or Saturday after classes begin. It is given in November prior to
pre-registration for spring and in April prior to pre-registration for
fall. The results of your test will
be e-mailed to Di Davis of the Registrar's office where it will be placed on
your University record.
Past history suggests that some
preparation is necessary to achieve a passing score. Reviewing a Precalculus or
College Algebra text and a Statistics text would be helpful. The current Math
114 textbooks would work well. Intermediate algebra skills are assumed.
The concepts covered by the Math
Proficiency Exam include:
Note: A working scientific
calculator is required. Calculators will not be provided at the exam. Also
bring your student ID and a number two pencil.
