Hinged Tilings

The interactive figures on these web pages correspond to the paper Hinged Tilings.
Abstract
The interactive figures are hinged tilings, formed by rigid shapes (colored) and empty spaces (white). By moving one vertex of the tiling, all the rigid shapes move also around hinges at the vertices of the tiling, and the whole tiling adjusts its global shape. The colored tiles remain the same shape all the time, they just change their positions and angles with respect to each other. To adjust for the movements of the hinges, the shapes of the empty spaces change, but remain congruent to each other. Students can explore different kinds of tilings by focusing at special angles of the polygons that form the empty spaces. Special angles will generate regular tilings. Students can develop familiarity with these tilings
first and later provide more formal proofs of the results illustrated by the hinged tilings.
