Orchestrating Efforts to Improve University Calculus Courses

Abstract: Maintaining high quality, personalized mathematics education in large size, calculus classes is challenging. Properly assessing students' knowledge, providing adequate feedback, and giving students guided instruction can be a daunting task. At Texas A&M, the average class size of engineering calculus courses is 100 students and class sizes of 300 are becoming "normal" in other introductory mathematics courses. Identifying areas within calculus courses where students can use each other as resources, where individualized assessment and video instruction can be administered via WebAssign, and where faculty can work as a team has helped promote student success at Texas A&M. In this presentation Jenn will discuss the organization and structure of the engineering calculus courses at Texas A&M University, share their solutions to dealing with large class sizes, talk about maximizing the students' educational experience, and will share the placement process for calculus at Texas A&M.

Jennifer Whitfield's visit is co-sponsored by the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware and WebAssign.
