Mathematics in Action in the Pharmaceutical Industry

During my Ph.D. training, I wondered whether I would be using mathematics I was learning after graduation. It turned out that I worried too much. The training is useful even though I work in a pharmaceutical company where mathematical modeling is not yet widely accepted. We will go over some example projects in cardiovascular and HCV disease modeling; quantification/metrology; and trial modeling and simulation where many mathematical techniques are used--numerical methods for ODE/PDE's, perturbation analysis, optimization (for parameter estimation), and probability and statistics. Some thoughts about research in industry from a junior researcher's point of view will also be shared.
