Mathematical Models & Movies: A Sneak Preview

The intersection between mathematical modeling and movies is non-empty. The Edwards-Buckmire Model (EBM) is a mathematical model which utilizes a system of three nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations to model the box-office dynamics of films released theatrically in North America. In this talk I will discuss the difficulties in developing an accurate mathematical model of the financial performance of movies. In particular, I will introduce the EBM and identify drawbacks to the model. I will then introduce some modifications to the EBM, providing a “sneak preview” of work in progress in this area. I will detail some of the important open problems in the mathematical description of cinematic box-office dynamics, namely the “Holy Grail” of a priori box-office prognostication and the Sequel Problem.
