Abstract: In the lecture, I will discuss the concept of Hardy -Littlewood maximal function as a basic tool for understanding the structure and geometry of Sobolev Spaces. From Gregory- Newton to Sobolev. Discussions include, in particular the foundations of the theory in relation to Newton -Lagrange interpolation,divided differences numerical analysis , approximation and averageing in integration theory.
