We share with you a love of mathematics and belief that learning mathematics is important. Besides the pleasure of doing mathematics and teaching mathematics many studies point to the increased earning potential for people with mathematics training. The Department would like to work with you to further the teaching and understanding of mathematics. We would be happy to help you develop your vision for mathematics in the University and beyond.

Gifts to the Department of Mathematical Sciences are used to support our general development goals including support for the MEC teaching laboratory, student travel to conferences and workshops, student seminars and meetings, the undergraduate lounge and other needs of the department. You may also designate your gift to be used for particular student awards as well as the Graduate Enrichment Account.

Practicalities of giving

If you would like your gift to the University of Delaware to support the Department of Mathematical Sciences directly, you can donate using your credit card. Be certain to designate your gift for Mathematical Sciences on the credit card donation form - check "Other" under "Please indicate below how you would like your gift used:" and type "Mathematical Sciences" in the adjacent box. In all cases, in order to designate your donation to support the Department of Mathematical Sciences goals, you need to specify your donation to be in support of the Department. Causes supported by your giving

In the recent past contributions to the Department of Mathematical Sciences have been used for a variety of purposes to enrich the educational programs and environment in the Department:

• We have furnished an undergraduate lounge and equipped it with computers in part using faculty and alumni donations. The lounge serves as a focal point for our undergraduate program and is used by students for group work and discussion. We plan further upgrades to the room as funds permit.

• The Department has a very unusual and novel laboratory for undergraduate and graduate research. The MEC Lab (Modeling, Experimentation and Computation) is central to our very active undergraduate research program, as well as a site for our capstone course. Alumni funds will be to continue to keep the lab up to date. We would also be happy to hear your suggestions for appropriate study problems. Professor John Pelesko is the main point of contact for this lab.
• Gift funds have been used to support the Graduate Seminar Series (run by the graduate students themselves and providing a research link between the students), for graduate student travel to present their work at conferences and to support undergraduate research students during the summer. These important educational activities will continue and we hope to augment them in the future.
• We have made two WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) awards for $5,000 to excellent female graduate students. We also use gift money to induct undergraduates into the honor society Pi Mu Epsilon.
• Computers are vital to our undergraduate teaching mission and our research. We have made a major expenditure on 4 Apple X-servers to provide e-mail, web and file services both to the Department and to the computer classrooms.
