We will discuss solute transport in porous media with periodic microstructures consisting of collections of pores interconnected by thin channels. We identify a physical mechanisms that promotes mixing of the solute with the host liquid and obtain the effective or macroscopic transport equation that the concentration of solute satisfies. We will discuss examples motivated by the transport of nutrients in bones.
