1. The Program

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware offers a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (BSMS). The BSMS is the program suited for students whose goals indicate a high level of concentration or specialization. This program is recommended for students who plan to pursue graduate studies in mathematics, or in other disciplines which require a strong mathematical background, as well as those students who plan to join the work force in areas that need strong analytical and quantitative skills.

The BSMS is a four year program, and the sample curricula in this handbook show how it is possible to graduate in four years. But it should be noted that the Department expects students to be able to start either in MATH241 or MATH242, Calculus and Analytic Geometry A or B.

Students who need to take a precalculus course (e.g. MATH117), should plan on taking courses during the Winter and/or Summer Sessions in order to be able to graduate in four years.

Note 1: If there is no interest in any of the minors listed below, the sample curricula are still useful. The choice of courses should just be replaced by other electives. These sample curricula are provided for guidance only - they don't have to be adopted. Only the requirements listed above must be followed.

Note 2: A grade of C- or better is required in all courses to be counted for a minor.
