Graduate Students Receive Excellence in Teaching Awards

Two graduate students from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Oluwafemi (Femi) Balogun and Rodrigo Platte, have received the University's Excellence in Teaching Award for graduate teaching assistants this year. Only two of these awards are given University-wide each year, so the Department is justly proud that two of our students were awardees.  In addition, the committee does not give even two awards unless there are enough "truly excellent candidates" to justify such action. This was an exceptional year and three awards were given in 2004.

Excellence-in-teaching as teaching assistants winners are graduate students (from left) Oluwafemi Balogun, Mathematics; Lisa Dill, English; and Rodrigo Platte, Mathematics.

Mr. Balogun is completing his master's degree in mathematical sciences this year.  Mr. Platte is working on his Ph.D. degree under the supervision of Prof. Tobin Driscoll.  By giving the award, the committee recognized their demonstration of the following criteria of excellence:
  • Highly knowledgeable and intellectually rigorous
  • Deeply committed to teaching and students
  • Skilled in interacting with students and promoting learning
  • Has positive and lasting impact on students
More information about the awards program may be found at http://www.udel.edu/teachingawards/awards/exc_teach/index.html.
Mr. Balogun may be reached at balogun@math.udel.edu; Mr. Platte may be reached at platte@math.udel.edu.
