NRC Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs ranks UD's mathematics PhD program among nation's best

UDaily calls it one of five "top-rated" programs on campus

The National Research Council (NRC) released new measures which place the University of Delaware's PhD program in mathematics among the top quartile of mathematics graduate programs in the United States. This ranking was based upon statistical analyses of various objective and subjective indicators of quality. In particular, the department led the nation in citations per faculty member. In most other areas of research output and graduate student success, the department ranked above the median.

The department's strong performance was noted in UDaily, where the department's program was characterized as "among the nation's best".

The department's overall ranking (between 11th and 40th with a 90% confidence interval) was higher than 19 of our 22 comparator institutions, and on par with the remaining three: Rutgers, Massachusetts, and Notre Dame. Our program was also rated as comparable to the program at Duke University.

The last NRC ranking in 1995 rated UD's mathematics department as 80th in the nation. This dramatic improvement reflects the department's continuing emphasis on scholarly activity during that time frame.

More information about the project is available from the National Academy of Sciences.
