UD Teams Score Meritorious Ratings in 2005 international Mathematical Contest in Modeling

The results have been posted for the 2005 international Mathematical Contest in Modeling organized by COMAP, and congratulations are in order for both UD teams who scored Meritorious ratings.  One team consisting of Janine Janoski, Anu Pakanati and Sumanth Swaminathan modeled the impact of a dam failure.   (Sumanth is the first student I have known to compete in MCM three consecutive years!) The other team consisting of Dan Cargill, Ki-Yong Kim and Geoff Oxberry modeled traffic flow through congested toll plazas.  Both teams were coached by Prof. Louis Rossi.  The Meritorious rating is the second highest designation for an entry.  Of the 664 entries, only 85 received Meritorious ratings, placing our students in the top 13% worldwide.  Only 10 teams received an Outstanding mark which is the highest honor.  An official press release from COMAP is not yet available.  This marks the third consecutive year that UD has fielded a Meritorious team in the contest, and it is the first time that we have had two teams do so well at once.  The contest took place February 3 through 7.  For more information about the problems or the contest rules, please visit the COMAP web site.
