Air
The closest major airport to Newark, Delaware is Philadelphia International Airport. There is convenient shuttle service available from that airport to Newark. Participants arriving by air should plan on arriving to the Philadelphia airport unless they plan on renting a car. While Baltimore - Washington International Airport (BWI) is not so much further away than the Philadelphia airport, no regular shuttle service is available between BWI and Newark.
Car
Newark is located just off interstate highway I95.
If you are arriving from the north, take the exit for state highway 896. Exiting at highway 896 puts you on South College Street (which is 896 for a short distance). Drive north on South College Street until it intersects Delaware Avenue. Turn right onto Delaware Avenue until you reach Tyre Avenue. Make a left onto Tyre Avenue, and when it dead ends into East Main Street, make another left. You will see the Super 8 Motel on the right after you have made the left turn. Delaware Avenue and Main Street run parallel to each other and each is a one-way street. There are lights at each of the intersections where you make the turns.
If you are arriving from the south, you will exit I95 in Maryland on state highway 279. Go north on 279 - it is also called Elkton Road. Follow 279 until you are forced to turn onto Delaware Avenue. Follow Delaware Avenue until you reach Tyre Avenue, make a left turn onto Tyre, follow it until it dead ends into Main Street, make another left turn onto Main Street. You will see the Super 8 Motel on the right.
Weather
June in Delaware is usually quite comfortable. Most likely no coats will be needed. On the other hand, the weather could be quite hot and humid, but campus buildings and the motel are air-conditioned.
Restaurants and Meals
Lunch and dinner will be served daily to the participants at the Blue and Gold Club on campus. The motel serves a light breakfast. For those interested in trying the local restaurants, a list will be provided.
Attractions
For those participants with cars, there are a number of attractions within easy driving distance. All driving times assume traffic is not too heavy.
- The Atlantic Ocean is about a one hour drive from Newark.
- Longwood Gardens is located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and requires a 45-minute drive.
- Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are located in the historic district of Philadelphia. (It takes approximately one hour to drive to Philadelphia.)
- Baltimore features the Inner Harbor and a wonderful aquarium (near the Inner Harbor). Both are located just off I95 in downtown Baltimore. The drive required takes about one hour.
- New Castle, Delaware, about a half hour from Newark, features a historic downtown district.
- There are two state parks near Newark: (1) White Clay Creek Park is just outside Newark and offers picnicking and hikes. (2) Lums Pond State Park, near Glasgow, Delaware, is built around the largest freshwater pond in Delaware. It offers hiking and picnicking, and is about a half hour or less drive from Newark.
- The Brandywine Valley near Wilmington is about a half-hour drive from Newark, and features the Winterthur and several other museums.
- The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia has a wonderful collection of impressionist paintings. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, at Benjamin Franklin Parkway and 26th Street, also has a nice collection of art.
