Many Other Things

I am Louis Rossi.

I am a mathematician, an educator and the Chair of a great department with an outstanding faculty and staff. We have 43 permanent faculty, about 60 graduate students and over 300 undergraduate math majors. We offer strong graduate and undergraduate programs, both general and interdisciplinary, led by an award winning faculty. These programs have national and global reach.

I enjoy helping students learn about and discover mathematics, and I have taught a wide range of courses across all levels. I have advised many undergraduate and graduate students on a variety of research projects. My most recent educational project involved bringing 26 advanced undergraduates to Melbourne Australia to study mathematical modeling and scientific computing.

Research & Students

My research interests focus on numerical methods and analysis of a variety of problems. I seek new and exciting mathematical problems that arise in the world around us. Much of this work involves moving particles of one kind or another, partial differential equations or computational methods. My research has been applied to fluid flows, insect swarms, wired and wireless networks, and robotics.

Modeling plankton predation to help save the world

Quantifying and Tracing Information Cascades in Swarms

The Role of Memory in Stabilizing Swarms

Global field interpolation for particle methods

Slime mold inspired routing for sensor networks

Using global interpolation to compute the Biot-Savart integral for elliptical vortices

High order swarm interpolation

Using wikis to promote active inquiry in calculus

BlobFlow! A solver for unbounded vorticity dominated flows.

Riu Fang - Modeling 801.11 protocols. Now a quant at PNC Bank.

Zhenyu He - Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics. Now at W. L. Gore and Associates.

Claudio Torres - Now Asst. Prof. in UTFSM at Valpraiso Chile.

A Little Bit About UD

The University of Delaware is the largest university in Delaware. The main campus is in Newark, with satellite campuses in Dover, Wilmington, Lewes, and Georgetown. It is medium-sized – approximately 18,500 undergraduate and 4,500 graduate students.
