Using Maple Outside The Classroom

You may purchase a copy of Maple for your PC for about $120 but if you do not wish to buy a copy then there are several options to do your Maple work. You may

No special instructions are needed for the third option. There are some special instructions for the first and second option and they are given below. Examine the web site www.udel.edu/help and then choose Computing Sites (on the left part of the frame) to view the computing sites on campus and in the dormitories.

Activating your computer account
If you have used one of the computers named Copland, Strauss, or Mahler, in the past, then you may skip this step. If you have not, then take your student ID (M-F 8am-5pm) to a Password Changing Station in the Student Services Building or in the basement of Smith Hall. There activate your computer account and set a password.

Using Maple on your dorm room PC
If you do not wish to purchase a copy of Maple, you may use Maple in your dorm room by connecting to the composers (Strauss, Mahler) via the software exceed which will make your PC temporarily emulate an X-terminal. After you are logged in to one of the composers using exceed, Maple may be started with the commands

newgrp **** Hit Return (Instructors check the 4 digit project number)
xmaple & Hit Return (This starts Maple)
exceed is available at no charge from the university - read
www.udel.edu/topics/connect/sw/exceed/docs/ .

Starting Maple On X-Terminals

$\bullet$
login using your username/usernumber and password.
$\bullet$
move mouse to blue part of the screen and click once the right mouse button. In menu which pops up, left click one of the lines which says Strauss, or Mahler. - but not Copland.
$\bullet$
in the new window which pops up, type carefully
newgrp **** Hit Return (Instructors check the 4 digit project number)
xmaple & Hit Return (This starts Release 5 of Maple)
Maple should start up - be patient. If the xmaple & command does not work then make sure you are not working in a Copland window. If that is not the the source of the problem then use
/opt/bin/xmaple &
instead. If you quit Maple accidentally you can always restart it as explained above (you don't have to login again).

Logging out from an X-terminal
Be sure to save your Maple work (as described in the Tutorial) if you will need it later. Next, move mouse to blue part and right click once. In the menu, left click the line Quit and Logout. If you don't do this someone else could wipe out your work.
